I’ve learned not to pay much attention to the actual ratings. Teaching is only a small aspect of what most professors do. Not that all the professors there are perfect, but I bet you they can speak english!! The incompetence of some professors that cannot even speak a lick of english. However, some professors will just say “read the textbook” really?? How in the world can you do well in that course, and how is it that the professors keeps his or her job?

A lot of students take courses like Intro Sociology with him and expect it to basically be a blowoff class. I’ve had three courses with him, and he’s one of the best professors I’ve ever had. It’s definitely helped me when building my course schedule and allowed me to avoid less-than-optimal classes. I personally really like RateMyProfessors because I think that the rankings of most instructors who have more than say, 20 or 30 reviews are pretty accurate.

Stunned that people don’t think this is unethical. I’ve always wished my professors knew which review was mine… but do can they really sense it? Rating a professor can be helpful to other students, if they can read between the lines too.

To any extent, I found most of the reviews to be pretty helpful.

But why take a professor, if you can avoid it, with a really crappy rating??
Yes, you should read the book, and you should take the initiative and read it before class if so inclined, but there are some professors that you really wind up teaching alot of the material yourself because they are lousy teachers.

So I think ratings are skewed by people with strong negative feelings. But it’s not a bad resource, and it’s helped me find/avoid professors. Incase you are not famliiar with MyEdu, it also tells you reports that students write about the teacher and it says the grade distribution of the professor for each class. The student’s opinions are usually accurate about the teachers but there’s sometimes the people that write two entirely different responses that contradict each other in every way possible.

Their narrow specialization, however, often makes them the best mentors for student research (either upper-division undergrads or graduate students). After I got to know her a bit, I learned it was because she assigned a lot of reading (for upper division lit. classes) and gave detailed tests and small writing assignments. If a professor is rated highly and has lots of comments indicating he’s great because he’s an easy A, that’s a bad sign. Or better yet, don’t form an opinion until after you take the class!

Finally, with regard to the professors not speaking English. Not all of the time, but many times it is accurate. Even if we took a professor who has only taught for 5 years (so relatively new, and not even tenured) who teaches 100 unique students a year, that’s still 500 students and 20 students is only 4% of that. I have two nephews (not a scientific study by any stretch) that went to Geneseo and Cornell, and they said by in large that most, not all, but most of the ratings were fairly accurate. You will also have professors that will ask the A students to write a good evaluation. The bad ratings are not accurate, but the good ones are accurate. If you chicken road 2 app want to know the structure of a course ahead of time, you could always meet with a professor during office hours and ask to see the syllabus for the class or ask about the structure of the class.

People who have had a very bad experience are more likely to be motivated to go onto Rate My Professor, and 20 students can be a very small fraction of a professor’s students. A lot of people just don’t have what it takes to make it. I’ve found RMP to be biased against Math/Computer Science professors. It’s hard to motivate yourself to go to class when you can’t stand to even look or listen to your professor.

Most colleges that I know have databases where you can see overall student satisfaction with a professor’s course, his or her effectiveness, grading style, etc. I think Rate My Professors should be used in conjunction with said instructor’s course evaluation ratings. All professors speak English; whether you understand their accent is a different story.

Reading up on profs can help you make decisions on who to take a class with, but I agree with others that it most definitely should not be taken too seriously. So, just like RMP, what we’ve seen is that the middle has fallen out of the curve, and we only get evaluations from students who either loved or hated the prof. As an aside, my university has gone to an online system for the official student evaluation forms, instead of paper forms done in class. @WasatchWriter‌ accurate and helpful comments, thanks

(that doesn’t help freshmen very much but I would prefer to take my chances with the course descriptions myself rather than miss out on a class I thought I would like because someone I don’t know didn’t like it, now I’m an engineer so I really don’t get much choice in classes anyway so take my words with that in mind) So while rating sites can be helpful I would base you class choices more on what the class is teaching and opinions of people that you know. In the past I’ve had professors who seem to work well with most students totally fail at helping me understand the material to the fullest and the opposite has been true as well. While popular professors are usually popular because they teach well and most students learn well from them, this does not always translate to individual experience. After it ended, i found out that the profs i picked all had fuller classes or classes with more people on the waitlist than the other profs who weren’t as good. There are times where there’s mixed reviews and if the class is useful for something and i’m highly interested in, i’ll give it a shot - that’s what add/drop is for… and i’m optimistic enough to be pleasantly surprised.

One professor is ranked really highly, but it’s because the student body finds him “smoking hot”. You will have absolutely horrible professors. Unfortunately, some universities offer far too much latitude to professors in how they conduct a course.

Also slackers don’t usually do that much research so I doubt many of them are going on there. It has been dead on for all of my classes. The site has some very valuable information, but of course there are the students who use it to find the class they can slack off most in.

Being a senior, I knew I needed to buckle down this semester and take the class, even though none of them interest me. I have the luxury of having several options for each class I need to take. Whether a professor will be “good” or not really depends on how their teaching style clicks with you as an individual.

From reading the ratings, the bad rating is merited. The lowest ranked prof with more than 1 ranking is at 1.3 with nine ratings. Over half of the 181 professors in engineering got the green happy faces. I wish I’d found RMP before I’d taken a class with professor of art history who turned out to have the critical thinking skills of a turnip. One professor is ranked highly, and it’s because he’s just really, really good at teaching the course that he teaches (graphic design).
