In July 2021, Google Drive for Desktop, a new app for Windows and Mac, was released replacing "Backup and Sync" and "Drive File Stream". Its main function is for the user to be able to set certain folders to constantly sync onto their Google Account's Drive. It was made mainly to replace the Google Drive desktop app, which was discontinued.

Google Workspace storage

Google Drive offers users 15 GB of free storage, sharing it with Gmail and Google Photos. The developer has not yet indicated which accessibility features this app supports. And features like Drive search chips help your team find files fast by quickly surfacing more relevant results. Drive integrates with Docs, Sheets, and Slides, cloud-native collaboration apps that enable your team to create content and collaborate more effectively in real time. And Drive is cloud-native, which eliminates the need for local files and can minimize risk to your devices. It was launched in April 2006, and integrates with Gmail for users to easily add events from email messages directly to the calendar. Google Workspace also has garnered a strong following in education, with over 70 million users by 2017. They all serve as collaborative software that allow users to view and edit documents, spreadsheets and presentations together in real-time through a web browser or mobile device. Google Drive offers a wide range of features to accommodate individual, student and business users. To accommodate the needs of different users, Google provides several ways for users to access their Drive storage. These integrations enable users to sign documents, create flowcharts, store multimedia files and complete other tasks.

Google Workspace

It competes with other cloud storage solutions such as Microsoft OneDrive, Apple iCloud, Box, Dropbox and SugarSync. Google Drive can be accessed through a browser or with a dedicated desktop or mobile app. The integration allows users to create, edit and collaborate on content without needing to leave the Drive interface. Google acknowledged this issue in 2019, and rolled out the ability to block users in 2021. In March 2017, Google announced that Google Drive had 800 million active users. On September 21, 2015, it was announced that Google Drive had over one million organizational paying users. On October 1, 2014, at its Atmosphere Live event, it was announced that Google Drive had 240 million monthly active users. As of 2021, these features have been consolidated into Google Drive for Desktop, which provides both backup and file streaming capabilities. Another, Save to Google Drive, allows users to save web content directly to their Drive. Any changes made to files in that folder will automatically sync to Google servers once an internet connection is reestablished. In October 2016, Google announced that, going forward, it would drop support for versions of the computer software older than 1 year. The option of yearly payments was introduced in December 2016, and is limited to the 100 GB and standard 2 TB storage plans.

Google Docs

In most cases, the apps continue to hold access levels until users proactively revoke their access to Google Drive. Sharing files with users not having a Google account requires making them accessible to "anybody with the link". In May 2013, Google announced the overall merge of storage across Gmail, Google Drive and Google+ Photos, giving users 15 GB of unified free storage between the services.
